Abstract

One of the maritime problems in Indonesia results from a need for more introduction to maritime literacy, which can impact the younger generation's lack of awareness of maritime affairs. Insights related to maritime affairs, namely marine and coastal environments, are very important to support the realization of Indonesia's achievement as the World Maritime Axis. To encourage the accelerated development of coastal areas by optimizing the advantages of the sea and making Indonesia the center of superior world maritime civilization, it is necessary to increase maritime literacy among the younger generation. It is hoped that the introduction of maritime insight can foster a sense of love in the younger generation for the maritime sector and increase understanding of the importance of maritime literacy towards coastal environmentally friendly behavior to support the sustainability of marine resources (sustainable ocean) in the younger generation, especially Taruna Taruni of the Maritime Department of the Samarinda State Polytechnic. This research aims to determine the understanding of Maritime Affairs Cadets regarding maritime literacy to build a young generation that cares about the coastal environment. The descriptive qualitative method was employed in this research. The results of this research are that Taruna Taruni understands maritime literacy regarding marine resources and their use for coastal communities, the importance of maintaining the coastal environment well to realize the goals of managing marine resources and sustainable coastal and marine environments, efforts to prevent damage to the coastal environment to build a caring young generation in coastal environment.
